San Rocco, 1549 - Urbino
San Rocco, 1549
Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Palazzo Ducale di Urbino, Urbino

The painting was purchased by the State in 2007 for the National Gallery of Marche. It came from Posatora church in Ancona and was part of a diptych of which the second panel is also known, now in a private collection. The figure of St. Rocco is recurrent in Lotto's works for the reverberations of devotional nature linked to the figure of the saint who pleas against the danger of plague. The iconographic approach is very similar to that expressed in the painting of Loreto that sees the Saint the protagonist along with St. Christopher and St. Sebastian. The young saint shows the infected bubo calling upon trust in the benevolence of God for healing.
